Hard seeded legumes a suitable fit for NSW mixed farmers
Research has shown hard seeded legumes can play a key role in driving down input costs without sacrificing production for mixed farming operations in medium to low rainfall zones.

Opportunity for summer legumes in Victoria
Existing summer crop options are limited for growers in the southern region who want to take advantage of sporadic summer rainfall events. Researchers have found potential for high-value pulse production in the Victorian high-rainfall zone and irrigation areas.

Can companion cropping improve fallow efficiency?
Cover crops are commonly used in Queensland to protect bare soil and improve the amount of fallow rainfall captured for use by the next crop. Companion cropping – growing wheat with chickpeas – may have potential to better protect soils and improve fallow efficiency.

Swathing could improve mungbean desiccation
Newer, more vigorous mungbean varieties are making it more difficult to achieve successful chemical desiccation. Mechanical desiccation – or swathing – could provide an effective alternative. Initial research has shown mechanical desiccation resulted in faster dry down and earlier harvest.

Expanding the opportunities for pulse weed control
New novel herbicide tolerance traits are eagerly anticipated to help manage challenging issues such as volunteer vetch in lentil and field pea crops. Potential new lentil varieties will add a second tolerance to existing imidazoline tolerance.

Early acidity management essential for pulse success
Soil acidity is an increasing issue across South Australia’s cropping zone. Prompt amelioration is necessary to prevent the development of sub-surface acidity which that limits the growth of pulse and legume crops.

Extending high-value pulses to WA
While Western Australia produces the lion’s share of Australia’s lupins, its share of the high-value pulses – chickpeas, faba beans and lentils – is low. Demonstration trials have raised awareness and helped growers to evaluate opportunities to improve agronomy and optimise yield.

Tools to 'see' mungbean success part of new research phase
The National Mungbean Improvement Program is entering its fifth iteration and aims to address how to assess gains in grain quality stability that can no longer be visually detected, while using pre-breeding screening methods to identify improved heat tolerance germplasm.

Irrigated faba beans break the 7t barrier
Irrigation provides the opportunity to produce hyper- yielding crops, with faba bean crops already exceeding seven tonnes per hectare. But higher biomass can be risky for disease and lodging, demonstrating the need to carefully manage these intensely grown crops.
