Grains research recruits from a wide science nursery
The opportunity to acquire and analyse big data from new technology such as drones, satellites and sensors is attracting more students from diverse backgrounds to research in the grains industry. Supported by GRDC Research Scholarships, recent examples are Chrisbin James and Daniel Smith, who are completing PhD’s with Professor Scott Chapman at the University of Queensland, while Dr Andrew Longmire has completed his with Professors Deli Chen and Pablo Zarco-Tejada at the University of Melbourne.

WA grains extension and innovation recognised with GRDC awards
The GRDC Grains Research Update in Perth has recognized two outstanding contributors to the Western Australian grains industry, awarding Professor Ross Kingwell the GRDC Seed of Light award and Robert Harrison the GRDC Emerging Leader award. Professor Kingwell, a leading agricultural economist with the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC), University of Western Australia, and DPIRD, has been celebrated for his adept ability to communicate complex economic concepts in a relatable manner to grain growers. His extensive work in agricultural economics has significantly impacted Western Australia's grains industry, making him the first in his field to receive this prestigious award.

Communications expert and agronomist each win grains industry awards
Australian agricultural communicator Belinda Cay and agronomist Jana Dixon were celebrated with prestigious awards from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). Belinda Cay received the GRDC Seed of Light award for her exceptional work in making grains research accessible and engaging for growers, while Jana Dixon was recognized with the GRDC Emerging Leader award, highlighting her promising contributions to the industry. Andrew Russell, GRDC Southern Panel chair, commended Cay for her broad and impactful work, ranging from marketing campaigns to professional development programs that significantly benefit the grains sector. Cay, the director of Ag Communicators, has been instrumental in various GRDC projects, enhancing the industry's communication and education efforts.
