Global recognition for grains scientist
Renowned Australian scientist and longstanding GRDC contributor Adjunct Professor Jairo Palta has been honoured as a Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America in 2024 for his exceptional contributions to crop adaptation to environmental stresses such as water deficits, waterlogging, heat, hostile soils and climate change.

Grains research recruits from a wide science nursery
The opportunity to acquire and analyse big data from new technology such as drones, satellites and sensors is attracting more students from diverse backgrounds to research in the grains industry. Supported by GRDC Research Scholarships, recent examples are Chrisbin James and Daniel Smith, who are completing PhD’s with Professor Scott Chapman at the University of Queensland, while Dr Andrew Longmire has completed his with Professors Deli Chen and Pablo Zarco-Tejada at the University of Melbourne.
