Legumes are often overlooked in many people’s diets, but they are a nutritional powerhouse. Packed with plant-based protein, fibre and a range of essential vitamins and minerals, legumes – such as beans, peas, chickpeas, lentils and lupins – are affordable, versatile and easy to incorporate into meals.

Legumes:

  • are high in fibre and play a role in supporting healthy digestion. Fibre helps regulate bowel movements, preventing constipation and improving the overall health of gut bacteria;
  • are an excellent source of plant-based protein, which is vital for building and repairing tissue, maintaining muscle mass and supporting immune function; and
  • provide essential vitamins and minerals such as B vitamins, iron, magnesium and zinc. These nutrients help boost energy, support brain function and even improve mood.
  • Regularly consuming legumes is linked  to a reduced risk of chronic conditions  such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes  and certain cancers.

Adding a quarter to half a cup of  your favourite legumes to a salad,soup, stew or curry is a good place
to start.
