New research will make it faster and easier for plant breeders to continue developing Australian faba bean varieties with desirable traits. During a six-month project supported by GRDC, a team of researchers from Agriculture Victoria developed a faster, simplified method of analysing batches of faba germplasm using high-throughput mass spectroscopy.

Research trials have found the practice of deep ripping can lead to significant yield and profitability benefits in cereal crops grown on sandy soils, so researchers are now exploring whether that is also the case for pulses. Soil variability and undulating sand hills make it riskier to plant pulses other than lupins, and low biomass can increase the potential for wind erosion to occur during dry times.

Exposed sandy soils are at greater risk of erosion, especially during low-rainfall years, but a new research project has found it is possible to both prevent and repair blowouts, even in a decile-one year. A survey carried out as part of the project found erosion was more likely to occur in the second or third year of dry conditions and cost growers an average of $80,000 each.

Grower-driven research is helping grain growers in one of South Australia’s smallest cropping regions close the gap between actual and potential yields. The results can be seen in the award-winning wheat crop produced by mixed farmer Tom Bell, which won both of the state’s prizes in the second annual GRDC Hyper Yielding Crops initiative, announced in August.

A dryland crop near Millicent took out both of the South Australian awards – for highest yield and highest percentage of yield potential – in the second annual GRDC Hyper Yielding Crops initiative. Tom Bell, who farms with his wife Lucy and father Greg at Emerald Farms, harvested 11.48 tonnes per hectare of RGT Accroc wheat in January.

Like many Eyre Peninsula growers, Tarren Minhard was attracted by the high price lentils were fetching in 2015 and 2016, but he has stayed for the rotational benefits they offer.

Bungeet, Victoria, growers John and Peter Alexander have grown a variety of pulses since starting with lupins in the late 1970s. They participate in GRDC’s Southern Pulse Extension Dookie Pulse Check discussion group, which connects like-minded growers who are happy to share their experiences.

Andrew runs the family’s mixed farming enterprise. He says the wild radish problem turned a lot of people away from growing pulses in the region, but that is now changing due to new chemistry and new techniques.

The GRDC Southern Pulse Extension project was established to help growers maximise income from pulses. GroundCover spoke to some of the people involved in the project about its outcomes. Vetch has been a staple in the rotation of third-generation grain grower Jeff Nickolls since he began producing it during the 1990s on the family farm south of Pinnaroo, near the South Australia–Victoria border.

Lentils are not as difficult to grow as they sound – that is the major lesson Brad Dennis says he learned in his first three years of growing the crop at Baroota, north of Port Pirie on the east coast of South Australia’s Spencer Gulf.
