    Technical seminars on Australian barley led to some of the most engaged audiences the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) has experienced in Guangzhou China. The seminars in Shanghai and were tailored to the technical needs of Chinese maltsters, brewers and barley traders, and sparked lively and positive discussions. More than 60 per cent of China’s malting industry attended the Guangzhou seminar alone.

    A canola variety modified to tolerate the herbicide glyphosate has been placed on the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) GMO Register. It is the first genetically modified (GM) food crop to be listed. GM and genetically engineered wheat is also gaining momentum.

    Australian wheat producers face significant challenges from stripe rust every season. Detections of stripe rust as early as late May in Tasmania and late June in New South Wales in 2024 suggests increased disease pressure , with the potential for the disease to persist through the summer months, raising concerns about a possible rapid build-up if cooler-than-average temperatures and above-average rainfall remains.

    CSIRO research supported by GRDC is looking at deep sowing canola and long coleoptile wheat to improve crop establishment and yields under hot and dry conditions, drawing on advances in genetics, agronomy and engineering.

    Not present in Australia, the Brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), (Halyomorpha halys), poses a significant biosecurity threat, particularly between September and April. When temperatures drop in winter, it seeks shelter in cars, shipping containers, houses and even inside luggage and clothing and is an expert hitchhiker. With the potential to affect over 300 different plants and crops, understanding and preventing its entry into Australia is crucial for protecting the agricultural industry.
