Business planning and staff retention focus at July regional workshops

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has announced the 2024 Farm Business Updates will be held in Three Springs, Calingiri and Nyabing this July.

The GRDC Farm Business Updates aim to improve grain growers’ farm business management skills by providing growers, advisers and agribusiness professionals access to the latest and best farm business management concepts and practices.

GRDC senior regional manager – west Peter Bird says the Farm Business Updates are a forum for growers and advisers to discuss farm business management concepts, and how they may optimise the management, profitability and sustainability of their farm businesses.

“Providing growers with access to the latest information and strategies when it comes to running their farming enterprises is a big part of supporting their future in our industry,” Mr Bird says.

“The 2024 program features an impressive line-up of topics that have been identified by grain growers and advisers in each region and across Australia.

“These will be delivered by exceptional local and interstate presenters, with a strong focus on facilitating the adoption of innovative and leading-edge farm business practices that drive high performing farms.”

The 2024 Farm Business Updates will be held in:

  • Three Springs, Tuesday 16 July, Three Springs Community Hall
  • Calingiri, Wednesday 17 July, Calingiri Sports Pavilion
  • Nyabing, Friday 19 July, Nyabing Town Hall

A set program will be delivered at all locations, and includes:

  • Strategic business planning: farm management structures, succession planning and financial planning – Successful farms have strategic business plans. From financial planning and dealing with succession, to taxation and farm structures – strategic business planning helps farmers be proactive decision makers instead of reactive decision makers.
  • People power: attracting and retaining staff – How can farming compete against large, international mining companies for employees? What is it that attracts people to work for those types of companies? The solution may lie in developing unique packages for staff and their families.
  • Demystifying carbon: a global perspective – Over the past decade, farmers have been busy farming carbon. Sequestration, calculations, planting, leasing land… but what does it all mean for the farm business? This session aims to drill down deeper into the global requirements for carbon and how it will impact Western Australian grain growers at the farm gate.
  • Making renewables work for you – With a growing number of renewable energy projects appearing across WA, farmers need to understand their rights, requirements and how to negotiate the most beneficial contract for their business.

The GRDC Farm Business Updates are hosted by local grower groups and partners including Three Springs Farm Innovation Network and Nyabing Farm Improvement Group.
