Avenues for building profit within local grain-growing enterprises will be explored at a forum in Loxton this month.
The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a Farm Business Update at the Loxton Hotel on Tuesday, July 30, when investing in grain storage, decision-making based on climate science, precision agriculture, and the value of soil amelioration will be among the topics discussed.
GRDC Grower Relations Manager - South, Darren Arney, says the Farm Business Update program has been designed to provide local growers with food for thought in terms of opportunities to grow the bottom line of their businesses.
"Decision-making around the non-agronomic aspects on their grain enterprises is just as important as what happens in the paddock and can have a major bearing on overall profitability," Mr Arney says.
"We need to ensure that our grain growers remain at the forefront of rapidly evolving business requirements and considerations - and that is the purpose of the Farm Business Update at Loxton."
How to make grain storage work and get more value out of the supply chain will be the focus of a presentation by Chris Warrick from Primary Business.
Mr Warrick, who also co-ordinates the GRDC's Grain Storage Project, will outline the key planning and design features of effective on-farm storage and will explain how growers can develop marketing and operational practices that improve the bottom line.
Peter Hayman from the South Australian Research and Development Institute will delve into the question of whether climate science can improve grain grower profit, providing examples of how data from the past can inform future decisions.
Taking a profit-first approach to precision agriculture (PA) will be Royce Pitchford from Rural Directions who will look at the impact of PA through strategic, tactical and reactive approaches.
Rick Llewellyn from CSIRO and consultant Michael Moodie will deliver an economic review of employing soil amelioration methods to improve sandy soils.
To be attended by growers, advisers and agribusiness personnel, the GRDC Farm Business Update will be from 9am to 1pm, with catering provided (including lunch).
